Lee-Ling

Not too long ago,I've had the pleasure of meeting up with a bright young girl named Lee-Ling at my project manager's wedding dinner. We've kept each other busy by exchanging drawings and scribbles here n there.I did not realize that that encounter has impacted her life in so much so that it fueled her creative juices to make the effort to come up with new drawings on a regular basis. If not in drawing, then it'll probably be about creative something out of whatever she can get her hands on. We've been exchanging drawings back n forth for a while now. Usually it goes like this, she'd draw something for me,sends it to me via daddy-courier and I'd draw something similar to her subject matter to give to her.Yes,daddy has to hand deliver it back to his daughter,Lee-Ling.
Here's our recent art exchange....rabbits! ^____^ According to her dad,she was really pleased with the outcome of her rabbit seeing as that is her first time attempting to draw an animal at an angle that's not on a profile.

My rabbit at top and hers below it...I like what she drew on the back page of the rabbit. Looks like an attempt at drawing a dog. Nice style there! My very first drawing I've received from her. Really nice ain't it? I was so very touched by all her efforts and gesture. Out of all the drawings she gave to me, this has got to be my most favourite piece. Thats suppose to be me and my dog. I liked the fact that she put a lot of effort into it, tho I can't remember owning that outfit plus that orange pantyhose. Haha! Classic! My poor dog apparently hasn't a backbone to him that his body sinks drastically while being tied torturously to the wall. And I like that she's a keen observer to details. Lookit the shadow effect from the lamp. Lovely ain't it? Truly an artist in the making. ^^
Her take on elephants. There's an elephant to both front and back of the page. Think I prefer the top one coz it has her as a little elephant there as well. Ain't it cute?
It wasn't too long before I realised that the way she'd identify me was by drawing a black dot to my lip area of the face. Looks like a mole there, but that's really my birth mark/scar. So yea, that's supposedly me,the big girl in the middle with her and her friends around me. Gotta love her attention to detail.

Every little piece of her artworks are now on display behind my desk on the office wall to color up my surroundings when I walk in each day. Lee-Ling,if you're reading this, thanx very much for all the lovely artworks. I'm very touched by each of the drawings you give to me and please do keep up the good work. ;)

CAT Conference 2006

The Creative Arts n Technology Conference 2006 held at Enterprise 4's Auditorium at Technology Park,Bukit Jalil recently on the 6th and 7th this month was both fun n exciting for me coz it means having another opportunity to rub shoulders with more animation lovers or animators, watch screenings of works and animation done by the local professionals and especially getting one of those rare chances of meeting up with old friends again. The icing on the cake was of course, a two part series of talk given by two reps from Studio Ghibli. Above pic showing some of my MnU friends having a blast in front of my digicam before the start of the conference.
Short screening of Howl's moving castle after lunch break.
I love sitting behind these kids. They're the coolest most frank film critics you'd ever want to meet. Here's what some of them were discussing about during the screening of our Saladin trailer..."WOW!That! What's that?" or "I like! Fire! People on fire!"My colleague Kamal at the podium delivering a short talk on our progress work on the Saladin tv series.
Got caught by some MMU and deviantart girls at the bathroom. I got just enough time to sketch something for one of the girls. Cheers ladies and thanx for the warm greetings.

Some additional images here....above is my work table at the office and below...WOOHOOHOO!!! Finally got my hands on a copy of 'Stormy Night' at Speedy Vids. Beautifully done and excellent movie overall. I'm so inspired! ^____^

Happy Holidays,Folks!

Sorry I haven't been able to update anything in my blog as of late, folks! Work was really really piling up not only at the office, but also at home for my group's artbook, commissions and freelance jobs etc. So here's a quick round up of what's been going on in my life. The gang at the office threw a lil' birthday party for Mel. Even my Spongie was in attendance! ^^ (on the table)
My lil niece,Dinah,is really growing up to be a very pretty lass. ^^ Peekaboo!Had a couple of awesome games of paintball not too long ago. Really worn me out eventually as the day drew to evening and there was a slight drizzle alter towards the fourth game I played. I should've known better than to play when my body was really really stressed and over exerted, but what the hey! It's paintball! Got hit a couple of times, but thank goodness there's no sign of bruising anywhere.
And I paid a very high price for it for the next couple of days with a slight fever and heavy nose leak. X( But thankfully the bug finally left and have fully recovered and am back in the game!

Also had to take my poor BimBim cat to the vet last Saturday (at top) coz she had a tooth problem. I didn't know it was her tooth that was giving her probs otherwise I would've taken her to the vet much much earlier and didn't have to scour all over PJ for an opened clinic. That day was Deepavali holiday and practically all the shops are closed save for a few restaurants and general stores. Well, it was a good thing we (me and Hoos. Thanx for bringing us there Hoos!)ended up at the emergency pet clinic at Subang, otherwise we wouldn't have met this lovely cat that was up for free adoption from the clinic. It was rescued from an accident that left it a bit slow in movement, but otherwise,an altogether lovely cat. If anyone's interested, please do let me know or u can contact the Healing Rooms veterinary clinic at 603-56376166 in Subang Jaya. The vet may not be able to keep it for much longer and may have to put it to sleep eventually. So please do help spread the word if you could, folks!
With that lil hiccup on the side, managed to get some work done eventaully. Commissioned works done in the wee hours of the morning.

Aaaahhhh, a great discovery indeed here in PJ. A couple of classic NY bagles for breakfast last Sunday.
Anyways, in light of this festive season over here in Malaysia, I've taken a whole weeks off from work to get away, relax and finish off most of my neglected work, responsibilities etc. But most importantly, to gain more inspirations during my travels and hours of goofing off (ok,not goofing off,but close enough!). WOO! Have a great week ahead, everyone! Cheers!

My wonderful colleagues

There's really some sadistic sense of humor going around in the office. And they're picking on my toys! I dunno who did that to my Spongebob,but,ooooooo...my poor Spongie. For the second image,I was wondering what had happened to my putty rubber that morning. It seemed less. Like half less. Then I found out where the rest of the putty went. Thanx,Mel!

Animation Pitch 2006

Our company at MDeC had hosted an event called the MSC Animation Pitch 2006 Awards for a tv series recently on the 24th of July at the Cyberview Lodge in Cyberjaya. Sure it's nothing and no where near as good compared to the recent San Diego Comic Con,but it got quite a lot of participants and guests from the local animation industry to come and cramp into one lovely conference hall and that in itself was a very fun day.
This is some of us at MDeC working on the Saladin project. That's from left to right...Choong Chi-Ren our scriptwriter, me (Hiya!),Melissa/Mel,artist extraordinaire and storyboard artist...and finally Ezatul, our project's researcher.

This is Inspidea Studio delivering their winning pitch. Their project's entitled 'Drop Dead!'. Smooothhh!
Another winning pitch given by local comic artist,Reggie Lee, entitled 'The Stalk'.3 guys having a blast...from left to right,my ex-animation lecturer and good friend Syed Hassan, currently working with RK Studios...Johari and William B. DuBay(what an honor!) from Vision Animation. Both coming out as winners during the event.

I see people....

The judges....from left you can see two of my colleagues Kamal and Vernon...the grandfather of our local animation industry,Mr. Hassan Muthalib and Steve Bristow, our project's director for Saladin. Another one of my colleagues with his hand cupped to his mouth standing there is Aik Wee.A group pic of all the 5 top winners during the event...RK Studios, Vision Animation, Inspidea, Reggie Lee and Animasia. Each of the winners received an RM50K grant to help start up their original IPs for a tv series done locally.

Jane's Mural

This was completed last month and it took about 2 months to finish. Like a few hours out of a couple of Saturdays actually. It all started when my one and only student,Jane, wanted to suprise her parents with something big while they were gone for holiday. So she told me of her plan to do a big mural in her bedroom to suprise them...and so here it is,folks! All finished and signed. The idea was entirely hers and we did some preliminary drawings and a painting before venturing for the big product. I'd helped to supervise and paint but I'm really really proud she took the innitiative to come out with something creative and big like that. I've only given her private drawing lessons on Saturdays for about half a year now but she made the effort to go over the top here, and I'm proud about that. Jane,if you're reading this, don't ever let that spark die down but keep on feeding it till it's a great big giant flame. ;)
