Whats the Scoop on Jom and Paul Robinson/David Rand

Heyas everyone! Eeee, how time flies and I hardly justify meeting everyones needs for new updates and fresf artworks to oggle at. So let's not dilly dally now...here it is folks! First and Foremost....
I'd like to congratulate Hadibi for getting his artwork published on the front cover of 'Jom' this month. F.Y.I. Jom is a new comic mag among many others here in Malaysia. To my eyes, it's contents are getting better and better, even the quality and style of the artworks innit are slowly but surely have been climbing steadily. Well,it's still new, so we'll have to see how it fares next year. Here's an image view of Hadibi's front cover work.

Oh YEAAAA!!! A week or 2 ago, I was informed of some art books or comic books of sorts that would be handed to me by my buddy and ex-colleague,Aliow. Little did I know that last Saturday, when we finally get to meet up over chow and more chow....that he is handing over to me these OH MY HONEST TO GOODNESS goodie bag full of old copies of Paul Robinson and David Rand books. And all still in mint condition!!! WAAAA!!!!My friend must've known my popped eyed expression, and guess, was real pleased I'm taking over ownership of these babies. Turns out, he has a friend who frequents Penang Island in search of good old second hand books there and if he should stumble on some good ones, he'd hand them over to Aliow. And since Aliow didn't want to keep 'em anymore, well then, just hand 'em over to me,babe! WWWOOOHOOO!!! I know these books are exceptionally hard to come by nowadays unless some of you guys out there can fill me in on whether any of these ever made it to republication or something. If not, then I'd appreciate it if y'all can get back to me onnit coz I'd like to share the contents of these gems with all of you viewers out there by patiently and carefully scanning them in here for all your viewing pleasure. ;) I checked the copyright thingy innit and it dates back 1963. O.O There's about 3 Paul Robinson books and 5 Dave Rand books in total, folks! So I'll be happy to keep this site busy with new updates on the books as regularly as I can put 'em in. So Lemme know, ya? Cheers Folks!

Me big bro can draw!

Hehehehe,I was really happy yesterday night when my big brother saw me doin' some sketches and declared that he could draw too. So imagine a cute scene of my big bear-like brother crounching over a side table doodling away beside me. "There ya go!" he boomed. Each character done in 10 seconds. Hehehe,if I ever find the time to animate again,I'll definitely give his designs a try. Very original and adorable. If you can't identify them, I asked him to draw African animals. there's the elephant, hippo and lion. ^^Give him a break folks, he's 34 and hasn't touched drawing since elementary school. (Oh dang! He squished an ant in the process! Sorry folks!)

This, coupled further with the evening's programme of me and me bro and sis-in-law enjoying reminising on good ol' 2D animated cartoons while watching The Sword in the Stone. (a personal favorite of mine) I soaked up the evening and enjoyed every moment of it, coz this is something we hardly ever do anymore, family evening, y'know.Growing up somehow makes everyone too busy for anything else anymore. Amazing scenes by amazing animators and artists who brought it to life.

That's all for now, folks! Thanx so much for all the wonderful comments and interests in the work here. Hope I can post more soon.

Gggrrr...why does it take me two times to upload the same pic before it'll show in my Edit post?

Let's talk about payments >.<...

Oooo....have been hit by a slacking period in my sketch department. Since my last upload,my productivity is basically centred on 2 things: One, drawing works for my company's projects (all P n C so makes it all the more unbearable not being able to upload any of the drawings till long after)....Two, focusing on producing my group's book, comics and posters for the upcoming Comic Fiesta here in KL (also P n C till looonnggg after the event is over *doh!*) . Can't upload anything! *sob sob* So anyways, I scrambled thru' my old stuff again and found something to put into my blog, and also took time out during lunch hour to sketch something up to add along with it. *sigh* Well, here it is folks!

Recently I had one student from an art school (which I will not disclose), asked me a question about his/her fears of getting involved in projects that does not clarify the matter of payments due to the artist once he/she is done with the project. Being a student, he/she was adviced not to be so money-minded from the beginning when given the opportunity to work on any project, therefore was told that it is not wise to bring up the subject of payments before venturing into the project. Well, I say it doesn't hurt to enquire at the very start just to know where you stand. I've had many bitter experiences of being diddled by so-called clients locally or abroad that takes this sort of matter really lightly. Don't be naive enough to presume that the client will get back to you on payments if you don't bring up the matter, worse yet, never mention about payments at all at the very start during the discussions. Always agree on the fixed amount of due payments with your client before venturing into any project. Otherwise you'll end up working long hours till morning on a project that you thought your client will be grateful for,and will definitely promptly pay you when the deed is done. Extremely rare here, especially in Malaysia. Hard to find an honest pay master who's only aim is to cut expenses as much as possible. Yea yea, I'mma crabby ol' Grump (bear in mind it's you perpetrators who've made me turned to the dark side. You know who you are.) Anyways in this case, if you're a student, getting involved in various projects really helps to boost your background knowledge, giving you good working exposure etc. though the pay may be low at first. If payment is not in the cards, then at least you know from the beginning when you're enquiring and agreed to do it nontheless. Better than waiting till the end of the project and get slapped in the face, right? >.O

Good ol' British comics

*sigh* Those were the good ol' days...my big brother and sister would reminise of their childhood days when they'ds wake up bright and early each morning to catch the morning paper which would contain the daily Beano or Dandy comic strips in a seperate copy by itself in small thin booklet forms. They'd both fight over who gets to read it first...then down the line I would appreciate their efforts in saving every scrap of those comics so I could enjoy them when I finally learnt to read and write. Dandy,Beano,Beezer,Topper...you name it...I love 'em all!
Sadly I dunno any place that sells reprints of them around here, if anyone can help me locate those ol' goodies I'd really appreciate it.

Also what got me to start up this topic is because I've always been curious as to who are the real talents behind these comics as there's hardly been any mention of them except that they do make appearances now and then in the comics themselves. Does anyone have any feedback or information at all with regards to this? *.* Man, I think these guys have eluded recognition far enough and deserve the proper credits they deserve. No one produces comics like they do anymore, so this is my contribution to them, to thank them for bringing hours of giggles and smiles to my childhood days.

More stuff...

Figured I better upload a little more in case I'm not able to have time to update next week. Cheers everyone and take cares!

Unifinished works...

I was browsing through my sketchbook today and found many of my unfinished sketched tucked neatly between the pages. Imagine each of these uploads as pieces of A4 size papers where ideas generate but all too sudden, fizzled out just because the mood to continue just wasn't there. >.< But thankfully I never threw any of the progress work away in hopes that someday I can go back to them to continue from where I started. Unfurtunately that hasn't happened yet, so I figured they're not gonna be any use staying in that stagnent state of affair,so I've decided to upload them here. Hope you all enjoy having a peek at my work in progress, coz I'm kinda sad at lookin' at their unfinished state.

Old Stuff....

I'm so ashamed I didn't really get to draw anything new to add to this blog,so I'll just be posting some old stuff till some good new ones come 'round....
Jerry and Amid's Cartoon Brew has been a tremendous help in keeping me up to date with the latest in the animation world and most of all, providing all those valuable links to great works and artists I never thought possible. Especially now with their new entry on the blogging boom among animators now,WOO! I'm so thankful that such great artists/animators are willing to share their wealth of knowledge, expertise and artworks to small timers such as myself to view and gain. Man, I'm so fired up and inspired by each individuals contribution that I hope to strive more and more in order that one day I can meet their level of passion, prefessionalism and skills.

Thank you so much,everyone!

Funny Hair

Last Tuesday on my way back from work I stopped at the last traffic lights before reaching home. The lights were red at the time so I decided like always to play with my hair...apparently I didn't realize that the black car next to mine was honking at me. Turns out that both driver and passenger in the black car found it quite amusing to watch me fiddling with my hair instead of concentrating on the road...so they, quite happily in fact, honked at me and indicated with a finger that I was suppose to be watching the road. And I detect laughter on their part as well. Much laughter. The lights were still red by the way, and it stayed that way for quite a while...Well,bully to me, I just stared at them in amazement till the lights turned green, the thought pounding in my head...'What just happened?' Apparently I made someone's day...anyone who is bored at staring at the road all day long...look out for my ol' lil DeeDee on the road, who knows, you might be amused too. :P
And i can still remember their licence plate number...WCM 121...*bleh*

Contemplating....

For a long time now,I've been seriously thinking about publishing, one in particular a book on drawings of animals. Perhaps with stories, a comic? Any takers if I were to endeavour so?

Cats in the alley

I caught a fleeting glance of this scene at a nearby alley in the neighbourhood. The big black persian was magnificent with the exception of a distinctly pink tongue sticking out of it's mouth,....and a wee little siamese looking kitten by it's side looking all curious and frightened.
Oh and found a wonderfully inspiring site by Sergio Pablos, one of the animators of Disney's Treasure Planet. (http://www.animagicfilms.com/animagic/WHO%20WE%20ARE.htm)

The hills are aliveeee....

...with the sound of muuussiiiccc! Aaahhh,Feeling really great this morning. I'm feeling really great, hip and totally WACKO! Completely in heaven...aaaahhhhh...life is good! I'm gonna paste one old and one recent sketch here to put some vibrance to the dull page. Did this during breaks at the office I'm currently attached to at Cyberjaya. Man,I really gotta study more on anatomy and learn to give more details to my drawings...but lazy work is sometimes more enlightening and good to look at work, don't you agree?Hopefully my stuff and this blog will get better as time progresses....:P

Well well well....I'm finally sucked into the world of blogging. No suprise there, I seem to be wasting a lot of my time online nowadays instead of doing something more constructive with my life. Thank you all for taking the time to read my baseless prattling on about accounts of my life, starting now ...and I'll definitely try my best to post in as many drawings/sketches as I can muster for your viewing pleasure. Dang, I definitely must get myself a digicam to make this place more interesting.

Anyhooo....I saw this bird of prey this morning on my way to the office, it flew past my car and landed in a nearby bush that I had to stop my car by the roadside to get a better look at it...and again,I wish I had a digicam-handy with MEEE!!!! It was so beautiful! White all over 'cept for the grey wings and I believe some blacktips...looks very much like a falcon...can't be an eagle, too small...I din't know what it was and I aim to find out, since to my knowledge,Malaysia doesn't possess any falcons in the region. Awestruck, I immediately made an attempt to get closer to it before it flew away again to some other destination I could not follow. Anyone who could help me identify this bird,I'd really appreciate it. It was also appreciating to note that a proton did stop and the driver indicated to help me, thinking I was in car trouble(in actual fact was a crazy woman getting in and out of her car stalking a bird), by reversing his car towards mine. But I did start my engine again and moved my car slightly forward. So the nice chap drove off, where I believe was towards the same building I'm heading.

Aiieeee, lunchbreak is over...better get back to work. Later.....
